Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey has always been a huge inspiration to me. The way Kubrick juxtaposes the past and the future in this film has always interested me. In this project I wanted to stay true to Kubrick’s style by working with select scenes from his film combining both a medium from the past and one from the present: hand-drawn animation and computer animation.

This project was much different for me than any other project I have worked on to date. Normally, I have an idea for a project which grows into a vision of the final output and I break down the process I would need to go through to achieve this. What was so interesting about this project is that I started it with no idea of what the final output would look like and trusted that the process would yield an interesting result. For better or for worse, I wanted the process to influence the end result, not the other way around. This project has two main elements: the hand-drawn element and the computer-rotoscoped element. With each element, I did not want them to be a perfect cookie cutter representation of each frame from the film. I wanted these elements to be more gestural and lend themselves to the medium being used. The hand-drawn frames having a rougher and more organic look and the rotoscoped frames having a more stiff and geometric look. Neither element was to be able to stand on its own, but together each one complements the other. A lot of time went into this project and there was also a lot of risk in the process, but it was a risk I was willing to take and in the end I am very happy with the final result as well as the process I went through in creating it.

Below are a few photos of my workstation and what went into creating this project.
